The countless racial injustices that have decimated our nation’s African American community, and, therefore, affected us all. The cumulative effect of a history of systemic racial injustices has brought us to this moment and requires that we be collectively and individually accountable. Some solace comes from the fact that the entire Carney family remains committed to shaping our future in a way that addresses the pervasive racial inequalities that have endured. The Supreme Court of Washington’s recent call to action aptly references the following moral imperative:
“The legal community must recognize that we all bear responsibility for this on-going injustice and that we are capable of taking steps to address it if only we have the courage and the will. The injustice still plaguing our country has its roots in the individual and collective actions of many, and it cannot be addressed without the individual and collective actions of us all.”
Dismantling systemic racism requires that we listen, educate ourselves, and dare to act. Carney will remain a safe place to have the hard conversations about eradicating racism and addressing social injustice. As a legal community, we must recognize black lives matter and then take appropriate action as individuals and a collective society.
This statement is merely a starting point, and we will be deliberate about being accountable to help make change happen.
